The short answer

Australia is hiring across the whole AI ladder, from interns to principal engineers. In a snapshot of 169 AI and automation job listings on Seek in July 2026, most demand sat at the mid-to-senior engineering level, but the fastest-emerging and most accessible roles need no coding at all. Employers are now paying $60,000 to $130,000 for people who can turn a business brief into working AI, and Sydney and Melbourne hold roughly 73 per cent of the openings.

Who is hiring for AI and automation roles in Australia?

The market skews mid-senior, but the entry door is real. Across the 169 postings, seniority broke down as 58 senior, 51 mid-level, 29 lead, 18 junior, 9 principal and 2 intern. That means most employers want someone who has already shipped work, not a first-timer. The accessible entry cohort exists, but it is a minority of the market rather than the bulk of it. By industry, the demand clusters where you would expect large systems and compliance pressure. Information and Communication Technology accounted for 86 of the classified listings, well ahead of Banking and Financial Services at 15, Government and Defence at 13, and Engineering at 10. AI automation is not yet a broad, cross-sector hiring wave in Australia. It is concentrated in tech, finance and the public sector, with the rest of the economy still on the edge of it. The practical read for a business owner: if you are outside those four sectors and waiting for a proven AI automation hire to appear in your industry, you may be waiting a while. The talent is being absorbed by the sectors that got in first.

What do AI automation jobs pay in Australia?

Salaries rise steeply with seniority, and the entry rungs are genuinely accessible. Of the 169 postings, only 41 disclosed a salary. Many employers use Seek's add expected salary placeholder, so the pay figures below come from that disclosed subset and are indicative, not a full census. Read them as a directional guide, not a national wage table. Junior and entry roles ran $60,000 to $85,000, with a median around $70,000. Mid-level roles had a median around $102,000. Senior roles had a median around $100,000. Lead and principal roles had a median of $130,000, ranging up to $210,000. Two things stand out. First, the entry band starts around $60,000, which is within reach of someone who has learned to build rather than someone with a computer science degree and five years of experience. Second, mid and senior medians sit close together in the disclosed subset, so the pay jump that matters is into lead and principal, where the ceiling climbs to $210,000.

Which tools do Australian employers actually want?

The stack is more Microsoft and Python than it is pure GenAI, and that surprises people. We deep-read 125 of the postings for the tools they named. Grouped by family, hard-code languages (Python, JavaScript, Java, C#) appeared in 30 postings, Microsoft low-code tools (Power Platform, Power Automate, Copilot, Power BI) in 27, LLM and GenAI tooling (Claude, GPT, LangChain, RAG, MCP) in 18, and RPA (UiPath, Blue Prism) in only 4. The single most-named tools were Python at 23 postings, Power BI at 19, Azure at 17, SQL at 16 and AWS at 13. So the modal AI automation role in Australia right now is closer to a data-and-cloud engineer who can wire up an LLM than it is to a pure prompt-and-agent specialist. There is an honest shift buried in these numbers. RPA, the old wave of screen-scraping bots like UiPath and Blue Prism, showed up in only 4 postings, while the newer LLM and GenAI family appeared in 18. The market is moving from rule-based robotic process automation toward language-model automation. If you are choosing what to learn, or what to train a staff member in, that direction of travel matters more than the current head count.

Do you need to know how to code to get an AI automation job?

No, and this is the finding most likely to change a business owner's plan. Of the 169 postings, 21 (around 12 per cent) explicitly stated that no coding or technical background was required. These skew to the business side of AI: strategy and governance leads, training and adoption consultants, transformation consultants and sales roles. Their salaries ran from $60,000 to $130,000, the same band as many coding roles. The newest and rarest archetype inside that group is the pure AI Agent Builder, a role that turns business briefs into working AI agents with no coding. One real example: an Australian CRM software company advertised an AI Agent Builder at $60,000 to $75,000, part-time, with the listing stating plainly that you don't need to be a software engineer. That is the signal worth sitting with. Employers are starting to pay for the ability to translate a business problem into an AI workflow, separate from the ability to write the underlying code. Where are the AI automation jobs in Australia?

They are concentrated in two cities. The geographic split was Sydney 64, Melbourne 59, Brisbane 13, Canberra 9, Adelaide 9 and Perth 6. Sydney and Melbourne together carried roughly 73 per cent of the postings. For an employer, that concentration is a warning about the hiring path. If you are in Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth or a regional centre, the pool of proven AI automation hires near you is thin, and the ones who exist are being courted by Sydney and Melbourne salaries. Competing for that talent on price is a hard game for a smaller regional business to win.

Is it faster to hire an AI automation specialist or to train someone you already have?

For most Australian businesses outside the big two cities, training is the more reliable path. The data lays out the hire path clearly: a $60,000 to $130,000 salary for the accessible roles, most of the supply pooled in Sydney and Melbourne, and stiff competition from tech, finance and government employers who got there first. The alternative is to build the capability inside your own team. Someone who already knows your business, your customers and your processes has the context that a new hire spends months acquiring. The gap they need to close is the building skill, and the accessible end of this market shows that building skill now commands a real salary on its own. If the market will pay $60,000 to $130,000 for a person who can turn briefs into working AI, that same capability is worth developing in a staff member you already trust. That is the case for capability transfer over a retainer. An automation built and owned by someone who works in the business every day survives. One rented from an outside agency, or bolted on by whoever was least busy that week, usually does not.

What about the most AI projects fail warning?

It is real, but the useful reading is the inverse. The failure narrative gets quoted endlessly, and it discourages owners from starting. The pattern underneath it is not that AI does not work. It is that projects fail when nobody inside the business understands or owns the workflow, when the wrong process was automated, or when the thing broke and no one could debug it. The hiring data points to the same conclusion from the other direction. The market is paying most for people who can diagnose which workflow to build and own it end to end, not for people who can name the most tools. The projects that succeed picked the right workflow and kept someone accountable for it. That is a capability question, not a technology question, and it is one you can answer by training rather than only by hiring.

After removing reposts of the same role across different cities, 151 were unique roles. We deep-read 125 of them for tools, tasks and salary. Only 41 disclosed a salary, because many listings use Seek's add expected salary placeholder, so all pay figures come from that disclosed subset and are indicative.
